The circulation of techniques (Micro choreographies in the laboratory)

The circulation of techniques (Micro choreographies in the laboratory)

The project "The circulation of techniques (micro-choreographies in the laboratory)" carried out at the invitation of FEUP's Cultural Commissariat. The project was developed around an artistic residence held between May and November 2016, and later evolved through a performance laboratory also held in November. Since FEUP is an institution where 261 research and teaching laboratories have been set up, it seemed to me pertinent to question the laboratory as a place of work, knowledge production and specialized observation in this context.

The laboratories are part of the collective imagination as places where transformations are carried out, often being portrayed by the cinema or literature, for example. They often appear to us as restricted areas, as a space for initiates. However laboratories exist in the most diverse scientific and artistic fields. Although often constituted as temporary experiences, it is a recurrent practice the creation of laboratories related to choreography, dramaturgy, sound composition, etc. It is interesting to note that the same word (laboratory) applies to the most diverse configurations and the most diverse techniques: from the development of photographic images to the identification of microorganisms and pathologies, from the experimentation of construction materials to the development of instruments, from develloping software to the analysis of data on the universe to the development of body consciousness or the development of writing. This project is build among the tensions that emerge from the attempts to characterize and problematize what can be a laboratory and how a laboratory can function.

We conducted this public presentation not as a conclusion of the project (this will always remain unfinished), but as one of the possible roadmaps for a series of accidental relationships that have been going on over time. Some of them, even though they have not resulted in effective collaborations, had energized the work process. Here we present a "science fiction" exercise where, in this case, civil engineering intersects with the cinematographic imaginary, museum research is done in a garage, and disciplinary boundaries temporarily fade to envision other ways of finding meaning in what we do.
